It was a great privilege to present a copy of The Great Ocean Road, Sea Breeze and Surf to John Landy as a thank you for writing the foreword.
John Landy, AC, CVO, MBE, served as Governor of Victoria between 2001 and 2006. He is also renowned for his many achievements as an athlete, author, natural historian and conservationist. As an athlete, John Landy was the second man to break the four minute mile, won Olympic and Empire Games medals, held world records for the 1500 metre and the mile run. At the 1956 Olympic Games he was given the honour of reading the oath at the Opening Ceremony on behalf of all participating athletes.
Much of Landy’s working life involved agricultural science and he has served on the boards and committees of a diverse range of sporting and community interest organisations. He was a foundation member of the Land Conservation Council. John Landy has published two books including A Coastal Diary: A Study of One of Australia’s Wildest and Most Beautuful Coastlines documenting his observations of the complex ecosystems of the Otways and the Great Ocean Road.
